Christmas Décor Trends of 2019

By NEW, Uncategorized

Son of a nut cracker, Christmas is coming! Time to make it rain tinsel, ornaments and poinsettias! Okay, so maybe cool it on the tinsel because that stuff will clog your vacuum… speaking from experience. Christmas decorating in 2019 isn’t like it used to be. People are breaking the mold and reinventing the perfect Christmas home entirely! This week we sat down with our fabulous staging queen Kristen, and are providing you with some of the biggest trends going down this year and showing you how we’ve decorated our own showhomes in the past!

Show Your True Colours

Now remember, the colours you choose are going to be the most important decision you make this Christmas (not really, but in terms of decorating your home, YES.) We don’t want you to hold back your holiday cheer; we want it to shine bright like a Christmas topper. Mix and match prints, colours, and textures. We’re noticing more and more floral patterns making their debut around the holiday season as well!

Plaid on Plaid on Plaid

Plaid is the holy grail of Christmas décor. It’s tasteful in every colour it comes in and we’re noticing it being used not only in rustic settings, but also modern, contemporary and glam interiors. Featuring plaid patterns through your pillows, stockings, table clothes, blankets, etc. can instantly make your home feel more cozy and Christmas-ready. Kristen explains that “plaid can be useful by combining unexpected color combinations. For example, a classic red and white plaid infused with pale green or bright pink stripes can give you the ability to use these colors as solids (pillows, glass ornaments, candles) elsewhere in your home.”

Blacks and Dark Neutrals

There’s been a sudden surge in black Christmas décor and we’re not mad at it. It looks super sophisticated and modern but still gives off major Christmas vibes. Adding pops of white, gold or glittering metallic provide a stunning sharp contrast against blacks and dark neutrals. So don’t be afraid to be a little dark this holiday season! “Seasonal décor will always follow interior design trends as they need to go hand-in-hand. Black trim windows, tiling, cabinet hardware and light fixtures are a popular choice for new homes & renovations. Your smaller ticket items that are easy to change need to reflect your home’s style.” Kristen goes on to explain that her favorite items this season in matte black are “reindeer, chalkboard art, glass ornaments and votives.”

Rustic Nordic Vibes

Scandinavian style is so simplistic and its white colour palette makes for a perfect holiday interior. Wood textures and crisp whites create a cozy vibe when including natural elements such as deer antlers, branches, faux fur, wood cookies and rich wooden furniture. This interior style is so timeless; it can work with any home.

Would Ya Euca That!

Eucalyptus has taken the home décor world by storm and is now entering the realm of Christmas décor and all we have to say to this is YAS QUEEN! Seriously, this plant works in any season but we just love how it looks when paired with other greenery such as fir, spruce and holly berries. It gives an earthy look to your home and when placed strategically on your dining room table or around your mantel, it screams elegance! Kristen explains that “live winter greenery is also a huge décor trend. Varieties that will be long lasting indoors & look just as beautiful as they dry out are the featured eucalyptus, lavender, magnolia, dollar eucalyptus & boxwood. You can make any old tree or garland look plump and fresh by adding sprigs of fresh greenery throughout.” She suggests trying “to vary textures, tones & sizes as well as create groupings of the varieties, providing focal points for the eye.”

There are so many different ways to decorate your home this holiday season. Don’t be afraid to mix it up! If you still really value your old Christmas decorations, incorporate your vintage pieces into your new Christmas décor. Your vintage pieces can remind you of all the great Christmas’s you had in the past, and your new décor can you remind you of all the great ones to come!

Eclectic Christmas

By Uncategorized

Last but not least is an eclectic Christmas look! We've styled our 'Vanessa' townhome in Cobalt Beach this way. Can you tell we shop at Home Sense a lot?!

ECLECTIC

  • Personality is the name of the game – let yours shine
  • Right for those that want Christmas to be fun, easy, styled but uncomplicated.
  • Happy medium between minimalistic & traditional – stylistically & budget wise
  • Once again – set your color scheme. We wanted a fun and bright Christmas style that went with the funky bright colors of the furniture & rug. We went with red, white with subtle hints of light turquoise inspired by the little skate ornaments. We have some rattan furniture in the home that we thought would shine by using burlap accents to really give that eclectic, low key look.
  • A skinny Christmas tree is a fantastic and cost effective addition to any small space – storage is minimal, but when it’s out the impact can be grand without overwhelming your space. This tree is from WALMART CANADA.
  • The fun of eclectic Christmas is the versatility each piece of décor holds. Last year we placed the pompom garland on the wall but this year utilized it in the Christmas tree. We used Merry and Bright on the tapestry last year – this year, again incorporated it into our tree.
  • Behind the sofa was a collage wall. Last year we used wrapping paper to festively fill some of our frames, replacing others with décor. This year we removed the frames and did a simple paper fan display alongside a Christmas banner, a festive wreath, & a string of lights all from HOMESENSE CANADA
  • TIP: layer your décor to ensure each space is cohesive. Our tree has burlap ribbon, so our wall banner also incorporated that texture. We have yarn balls in the wreath on the wall, we then had the (yarn) pompom garland on the tree, and yarn trees on the dining table all in the same color. This style like all others is all about styling with intention.

Traditional Christmas

By Uncategorized

Next up - Traditional Christmas! You can see this in action at 148 Joyal Way.

TRADITIONAL

  • More is more
  • Right for those that love all things Christmas, start decorating as soon as possible and keep it up until they absolutely have to take it down, find happiness in a Christmas stuffed home.
  • Set your color scheme – at this level of Christmas, things can get away from you fast. Our show home was mostly whites and blues, with the occasional pop of red. Red is a staple for traditional Christmas so we set our color scheme to match – blue, white & touches of red.
  • Similar to minimalistic style, decorate with intention. Smaller areas use less, larger areas – accessorize to your heart’s content. Ensure your décor is within your select color scheme as well as style to ensure a cohesive look and feel.
  • Ensure you’re decorating safely. With more décor – the more plug ins are being utilized, the heavier your tree is, the more items for little hands to pull down etc. Ensure your décor isn’t a hazard within your home.
  • TIP: While traditional is beautiful – try to incorporate something unique for a WOW factor: ie: Typically we incorporate ribbon into our trees. This year we used flocked garland from LOWES CANADA to wrap our tree horizontally, then used blue oversized feathers from CANADIAN TIRE for vertical movement, we then topped the tree with a wreath instead of a traditional star.

Minimalist Christmas

By Uncategorized

First up in our series of Christmas decor is minimalist themed - check this out for yourself at 146 Joyal Way!
PS - hover over each picture to find out where to get these items.

 GET THIS LOOK:

  • Less is more
  • Right for those that either love the Scandinavian look and feel of Christmas, those that don’t enjoy the set up / take down / storage of Christmas, budget conscious folk, or those with pets/kids that seek and destroy Christmas décor.
  • Stick to minimal use of color – in our modern white space, we used punches of black, warm woods & metallics; tying in a few white punches for style cohesiveness.
  • All pieces can be easily moved for entertaining
  • Keep things simple – an ornament or 2 hanging from a door handle goes a long way
  • Always wanted a real tree? Don’t have the space, décor or desire to upkeep – having a smaller tree (3-4 ft) gives the look and feel but in a more accommodating size. 1 string of large ball lights and a HOMESENSE basket – done.
  • TIP: set your budget, keep your décor intentional and kept within certain rooms to maximize the effect of what you do use (we kept ours to the front entry, living room & dining nook), make friends with 3M strips and hooks or utilize existing nails (replacing a photo with a wreath or festive piece of art).
